'Swat, once a verdant land of peace ad promise, has been shaken entirely by militancy and strife in the last few years. The launching of military operations in 2009 forced a huge exodus into relief camps that were set up in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The association with Swat communities of the Heritage Foundation's volunteer wing; the Karavan Volunteers, began when we set up camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Shaikh Shahzad Camp in Mardan. Working mainly with women and children, the project began with the distribution of food and non food items that had been collected through the generosity of friends and well wishers. In cooperation with the camp authorities, led by Mr Mudassir Malik, community kitchens were constructed providing a cool haven in the intense heat of Mardan. The Speedy construction was based on the use of sustainable materials, such as bambo, mud, lime and matting, that provided eminently suitable accomodation.
In addition, a large tent was set up as an assembly venue for women where activities such as sewing for livelihoods, literacy classes and instructions on hygeine practices were carried out. In another large tent daily classes were held for children to encourage sports and crafts activities.'

'As the disastrous 7.6 Richter Scale earthquake occurred on 8 October 2005 in Northern Pakistan, resulting in unprecedented destruction and enormous loss of life, it galvanised the whole nation as one. Every Pakistani was determined to help in whatever way she or he could. For us as an heritage organization the difficult task was to determine how we could be of help to those affected by the colossal disaster. We are meither doctors nor aid workers who could provide immediate succour to the suffering humanity. But as we visited the area and pondered, it became clear that there was a role for us in providing assistance in this enormous disaster.'

'The project "Improving Poor Urban Living Conditions through Promoting Cultural Industries in Mansehra" was begun on 1st April. A well designed structure was developed when initiating the work. This structure is based on the project "Reviving Livlihoodthrough Handicrafs in Post Conflict Areas" that was undertaken in Swat in 2010. Lessons have also been drawn from the foundation in post-Earthquake 2005 in the Siran Valley for women's empowerment through crafts. Accordingly, capacity building was carried out by focusing on mohallahs and enabling women to undertake income generating activities within their homes'
